McCully Workshop announce new single "All the Gingerbread Men"

A new single is all set for release on the Mountain Records label. Here is the press release from the band.

McCully Workshop - Tully and Mike McCully, Rupert Mellor, Richard Black and Gordon Mackay - are excited to announce their new single ‘All the Gingerbread Men’.

The track is a classic McCully Workshop rock song, featuring energetic guitars, rich melodic layering and a powerful chorus. Lyrically it draws from fantasy imagery and tells the story of a king in a castle, a wizard and an enchanted army of blood-thirsty gingerbread men.

“The song came to me in a dream, and when I woke up all I could remember was the line 'all the gingerbread men in the water’” says Tully (lead vocals and bass). “For me it felt allegorical about people who are rich and famous being envied by those who are not. So it became this sort of dark fairy tale about jealousy and revenge.”

There is some moral ambiguity though, and it’s not entirely clear who is right or wrong. “For me the lyrics are a metaphor for dominance by an unseen and insidious group trying to take away personal freedom including that of the king, the so-called leader of the free world, who had betrayed them” says Mike (drums and backing vocals).

As with their 2022 single ‘Beginnings’, the track was recorded and created remotely since guitarist Richard is now based in the UK. “Bringing Tully's dream into reality presented its challenges”, says Richard. “I fancied a dark riff threading through the song so took a section from the end written by Tul and combined it with my own riff, using some ideas from Mike. I also included some reggae-infused sections, and the fills were unashamedly Brian May inspired - I love the way it turned out!”

The song’s anthemic chorus, with its layered harmonies, captures the hallmark McCully Workshop sound. Gordon (keyboard and backing vocals) says “it is a testament to the band's ability to either work together in the studio, or in this instance, work "together" miles apart! It really sounds as though we were all playing, singing and recording together at the same time.”

"All the Gingerbread Men" is available on all digital platforms from Feb 9th 2024.

New Tony Cox re-issue - Enormous Flowers

Acoustic guitarist Tony Cox has a number of different genre in his diverse repertoire. Enormous Flowers is a full band album of thirteen original songs in the Neo-Soul groove.  Produced by award winning producer Joe Arthur in Johannesburg some years ago, this record has been off the market for a while. It comes back for streaming on the 18th July 2025.   Photo for the re-issue sleeve Here a statement from the artist - After releasing several instrumental albums, Enormous Flowers marked a return to where it all began for me. In those early days, singing took centre stage—I was a regular at folk clubs, known more for my voice than my guitar. Over time, though, my focus shifted. Instrumental guitar music became my main outlet, and eventually, the vocals faded out altogether. Coming back to singing through Enormous Flowers was a deeply emotional and unexpectedly joyful journey. Collaborating with other musicians a...
