First Single from McCully Workshop Album

The McCully Workshop album, I nfinity  was released at the end of last year and now the first single, post album release, has been chosen from the tracks, and it will be issued this week. The track is a Tully McCully composition called Tainted . It is best described as a Moody Blues inspired, rock ballad. Tully also does the lead vocals. There were two songs issued that pre-date the album release. LP versions of these are on the new album. (c) iTunes (no music preview until release date). Tainted is a dreamy fantasy, sparsely produced, with lead vocal set against a bluesy electric guitar. It is unlike most of the songs for which the band are known. Perhaps their debut single,  Why can't it Rain (charted 17/7/70),   is the closest comparison. The music in our heads was tainted, played by the few, we lost the life we knew. Great sounding Indie Rock Releases

In the last nine months or so the Tin Can Discs label has facilitated the release of rock albums by Cape Town rockers, Falling Mirror and McCully Workshop . Both records are released through LTE Distribution as digital only offerings. (c) Spotify - All nine tracks are available for streaming and download.(on iTunes) The first of the two to go out was the final album by Falling Mirror. Guitarist, Allan Faull actually passed away in the studio during the recording and the project went on ice until producer Tully McCully decided that despite the setback, the record should be released. He called in singer and composer, Nielen Mirror (Nielen Marais) and finished the tracks that he could. Although only nine tracks made it to the final release stage, they are perhaps the most cohesive collection that the band have recorded in their thirty odd year career. Though more associated with the electric guitar, Allan features on acoustic guitar on many of the songs. The album was preceded...

Two traditional African projects in distribution.

In the last quarter we have made two interesting African projects available on all digital platforms for the respective producers. The first is the debut album, titled  Songs of Greetings, Healing and Heritage , by Mantombi Matotiyana. A novel occurrence is the fact that this is her solo recording debut, for a lady of over eighty years of age. She has recorded before on the albums of Dizu Plaatjies and his group Amampondo, as well as performed with them, but not as a solo performer. The album was produced by Prof. Mike Blake in conjunction with the Stellenbosch University Music Dept. on the AOI Edition label. Matotiyana with her Umrhube. (c) Aryan Kaganof 201 8 Mantombi Matotiyana is a master bow player having learned the uhadi (sometimes known as the long woman's bow), the umrhube (the mouth bow of her tribe, the Xhosa people) and the isitolotolo (the jaw's or jews mouth harp), from her forbears. She also learned the traditional songs a...

Lesley Rae Dowling - Spaniard remixed.

Great news. Producer, Terence McCullagh, who produced most of Lesley Rae Dowling's hits has been working on the old master tapes of her recordings.  A re-issue album featuring the singer's classic songs is planned for later this year. Lesley is something of an enigma in the South African (SA) entertainment scene. Critics hailed the release of her debut recordings in 1981, as a ground breaking moment in SA pop music history. She had a meteoric rise in media profile and then disappeared from the business after four albums. More of that story later. Some of the multitrack tapes from the original recording sessions have deteriorated beyond rescue but fortunately this is not the case with all of them. It is still possible to restore parts of the missing or damaged sequences, with the aid of digital technology employed in current music production. Lesley Rae Dowling circa 1984 (c) Songwrights  The first re-issue will be Lesley's classic song, The Spaniard, which Ter...

Jazz Funk Merchants or Boy Band?

Wow. When I was given a pre-release copy of the music at a jazz expo last year, I was not quite sure that the work of four good looking French boys was going to be my bag. Funny how we have programmed ourselves to expect certain images for serious jazz artists. The photo accompanying the music was not what I thought a jazz quartet would look like. (c) Critical Quartet Experience 2019 Well how wrong could I be? Four young French jazz musicians who can really play, compose and look good. It's funk, jazz and fusion, sometimes with a retro feel, but these guys rock! Their debut release, titled Mental Distortion , is out tomorrow on all digital platforms. There are 6 tracks on the digital package. All original. I have a feeling we are going to hear more from these guys.
