Janie Renée - Brazil inspired album

A new album by Janie Renée, INESPERADO

Janie Renée is a franco-Ontarian singer-songwriter, a master of words and syncopated melodies. She is one of those unclassifiable artists. She is now presenting her fourth album, an opus filled with Brazilian roots music and beautiful poetic lyrics.

INESPERADO is the name of this new album. It’s the result of numerous collaborations with Brazilian artists, between the typical rhythms and sounds of Brazil and the poetic and imaginative pen of Janie Renée. Eleven original pieces, with majestic acoustic orchestrations and traditional instruments (cavaquinho, bandolim, pandeiro, surdo, viola 7-cordas and all the rest) compose this luminous album, full of hope and sweetness. Recorded between Rio de Janeiro and Canada, it features arrangements by Brazilian cavaquinhist Jayme Vignoli and the measured, penetrating and splendid musical performances of many musicians, each a master of their art.

After accompanying her father through a long illness and after his passing, Janie Renée needed to get back to writing and took advantage of an artistic residency in Rio thanks to the Ontario Arts Council. She met many artists such as Bernardo Aguiar, Oscar Bolao, Leandro Braga, Jayme Vignoli, Guinga, Anna Paes, Monica Salmaso, Marcelo Cebukin, and soon, inspirations started flowing. She explained it was like « finding roots where I thought there was none ». It was during a work session where Leandro Braga gifted her with a melody (Nous, imaginaires) that the idea of making a recording with songs composed in collaboration arose. Unexpectedly, within three days, five pieces were recorded in a burst, hence the title of the album. Back in Canada, Janie Renée contacted Canadian-Brazilian artists and began new collaborations in order to complete a full album. INESPERADO proposes two sublime duets with the warm voice of Paulo Ramos, a choro, a schottische, sambas, bossa nova, bossambas...in short, jewels of songs that will delight your ears as much as your soul.

INESPERADO, is music that resonates from the heart to the soul: inspired, profound. It’s pure sunshine, and a definite balm for these tumultuous times. It’s a bewitching, sensitive and delicious album. Janie Renée’s unique voice and Brazilian music complement each other perfectly. We’re sure of one thing: this album is full of magic.

McCully/Mackay Prog Rock project

Terence McCullagh aka. Tully McCully, has pulled in keyboard specialist Gordon Mackay to partner with him on his first solo album.  Tully and Gordon have performed together in McCully Workshop, but what they are offering this time is very different to the sort of music they do in their band.  Tully started out recording this new material on his own and then saw that it would be appropriate to have an instrument that is featured in solos and special parts of the songs. Tully is a multi-instrumentalist with bass and guitar being his specialities.   Adding Gordon, who is  classically schooled and a  virtuoso electric keyboard player, provided just the right additional elements required for the musical style they are recording. Gordon is the brother of well known rock musician, Duncan Mackay, who made a name for himself in the UK in the 1980s, notably with the band...

Robin Auld's third album - Ocean Motion

Probably the most commercially successful of his early records, Ocean Motion is Robin Auld & Z-Astaire's second and Auld's third album. (c) Songwrights Publishers. Photo Bruce Granville-Mathews. We re-issue the original tracks on the 30th of August 2024. Here is a press release from the artist management. > Ocean Motion was Robin Auld and Z-Astaire's 2nd album for the band line-up.  Produced in 1985 by Kevin Shirley in Cape Town for Mountain Records, it yielded the number one song All of Woman, along with other top ten songs Sesheke Town and After the Fire .  The band's sound had consolidated after several tours and the release propelled them further into national prominence in their home country of South Africa, playing big shows country wide and confirming them as one of the countries top rock music acts.  The album also showcased the  wider influences of the band and Auld's songwriting in songs such as " Village is a house " and " ...
