Cape Zeebra - part 2

In the early 1980s the Cape Town based songwriters Louis Ribeiro and Brian Sepel were a pretty active team. They wrote songs together, they also performed live and in the studio together.

Both artists have since passed away. The last album they did together under the band name Zeebra was a little surprise for the local music industry. Actually it was also their only full length album. Titled Uncertain Age it won a SARIE Award (the South African Grammy of the day) for the best rock album recorded in 1983, to the envy of many of the old hands in the game then.

As the duo Beanstalk they released two singles on the Mountain Records label. Louis was not only a writer, he was a powerful ballad singer. This talent is very clearly illustrated on the Uncertain Age album.

They recruited Phil Smiedt on bass, Savy Grande on Drums, Gary Horn on saxophone and one or two guests and booked into Jerry Barnard's B&S Studios. Murray Stewart was one of the resident engineer/producers and he started the tracks, with Jerry taking over the final mixes.

Following the reaction to the re-issue of the recent single version of Wake the Day 4 months ago, we have searched for more of the music by the duo. Sadly only a part of the sessions from the original full LP are still available in the Mountain Records archive, and we are happy to release these songs again. One of the featured guest performers was guitarist Jonathan Butler.

Louis had several side projects after the Zeebra album including recording under the name Jive Nation, for Andrew Brel's Bridge Recordings label in the UK, to where Louis had re-located.

We are making this EP available under the band name Cape Zeebra due to the fact that since 1983 another act has come to the market using the band's original name. We present Uncertain Age Part 2 for digital release on the 24th of June 2022.

McCully/Mackay Prog Rock project

Terence McCullagh aka. Tully McCully, has pulled in keyboard specialist Gordon Mackay to partner with him on his first solo album.  Tully and Gordon have performed together in McCully Workshop, but what they are offering this time is very different to the sort of music they do in their band.  Tully started out recording this new material on his own and then saw that it would be appropriate to have an instrument that is featured in solos and special parts of the songs. Tully is a multi-instrumentalist with bass and guitar being his specialities.   Adding Gordon, who is  classically schooled and a  virtuoso electric keyboard player, provided just the right additional elements required for the musical style they are recording. Gordon is the brother of well known rock musician, Duncan Mackay, who made a name for himself in the UK in the 1980s, notably with the band...

Robin Auld's third album - Ocean Motion

Probably the most commercially successful of his early records, Ocean Motion is Robin Auld & Z-Astaire's second and Auld's third album. (c) Songwrights Publishers. Photo Bruce Granville-Mathews. We re-issue the original tracks on the 30th of August 2024. Here is a press release from the artist management. > Ocean Motion was Robin Auld and Z-Astaire's 2nd album for the band line-up.  Produced in 1985 by Kevin Shirley in Cape Town for Mountain Records, it yielded the number one song All of Woman, along with other top ten songs Sesheke Town and After the Fire .  The band's sound had consolidated after several tours and the release propelled them further into national prominence in their home country of South Africa, playing big shows country wide and confirming them as one of the countries top rock music acts.  The album also showcased the  wider influences of the band and Auld's songwriting in songs such as " Village is a house " and " ...
