Before the real chart breakthrough McCully Workshop were an indie pop group playing the Cape Town, South Africa (SA) circuit. They released six albums in all and this is the second one, released for fans of SA rock history.
The original label was Truetone and the digital release will appear on Mountain Records on 28th February 2025.
Musically it is quite adventurous. All original songs.
Text from the producers -
We are proud to announce the first ever streaming release of McCully Workshop's cult-classic sophomore album 'Genesis'.
'Genesis'
was originally released in 1971 by an early lineup of the iconic South
African band, featuring founding members Tully and Mike McCully as well
as Bruce Gordon and Ian Smith.
Following
the release of their debut album 'McCully Workshop Inc' on Trutone the
year prior, the band decided to change musical direction and embraced a
more progressive rock sound.
'Genesis'
was recorded in Cameo Studios in Long Street, Cape Town, on a 4-track
Ampex machine. The songs were learned and rehearsed before being
performed and recorded mostly in single takes with no edits.
Unfortunately
a technical problem caused by the engineer who wired the original
studio was discovered while at Audio Arts in Joburg. With mere hours
before the album was due to be cut and no way to play the original Dolby
recording, Tully tried to remix the album on a 4-track. "Sadly a lot of
the sound was compromised" he recalls, "but I did my best at the time
to try and get as good a balance as I could."
The
resulting album uses biblical themes as allegories for the importance
of not interpreting everything that is written literally, and encourages
the listener to consider the historical and modern contexts of
philosophies they apply to their daily lives, always reading between the
lines.
'Genesis'
enjoyed some moderate success upon its original release and went on to
become a cult classic and a rare and sought-after collectible album. We
are excited to announce this iconic album is now widely available across
digital platforms.
